A Walk in the Woods

A Walk in the Woods of Jacob Burnet
The aim of the exhibit is to show unusual, in-depth and detailed images of the ecology of Burnet Woods. Divided by trail, the artist invites the viewer to experience the often missed and hidden beauty of the park. Rama Kasturi has lived in Clifton for 23 years.
Her visual experience walking in Burnet Woods is documented in this photography exhibit.

“This exhibition has been born out of my desire to share with you some of what I have seen and experienced by walking the trails within Burnet Woods Park for over two decades. The park is a photographer’s dream offering year-round interest. My photographs are a testament to the timeless beauty of these woods located in the heart of the city and a visual reminder that the woods, like life, are constantly renewing themselves.

I hope that my photographs will inspire you to explore the woods and leave you with a better understanding of what lies within its canopy. The images have been selected to showcase the intricate details and dazzling array of colors, textures, shapes, and forms of the immense variety of flora and fauna that are an integral part of Burnet Woods. The interplay of light and dark along the major park trails and the seasonal beauty of the woods are highlighted in these photographs.

My first experience of Burnet Woods was in the Spring of 1996, when I rescued a dog and needed a place to exercise him daily. Twenty years later, I still walk in these woods with my dogs, marveling at this urban “parkscape”. My daily two mile hike through the woods and around the park has offered me the opportunity to see, hear, smell, and experience first-hand the full scope of everything this park has to offer.”
-Rama Kasturi

Join us for an evening with the artist: enjoy light bites + beverages.
Take part in an interactive floral art installation + create your own bouquet with Ohio flowers of the season.

FREE + Open to the Public.

Modern Makers: BLACK & WHITE

Black & White is a joint exhibition that will take place in two partnering galleries in Cincinnati simultaneously: Niehoff Urban Studio (Clifton) and Harvest Gallery (Over-the-Rhine). Works in Niehoff Urban Studio will explore the color Black and its associations; works in Harvest Gallery will explore the color White and its associations. Through a range of media including art objects, performance and new media, artists interpret the colors black and white both formally and conceptually. Artists will manifest ideas and memories that may embrace or subvert this popular but rigid chromatic and sociological polarity. Curated by Kate Tepe with Modern Makers.

Magenta Exhibition

Magenta Exhibition

Event: Modern Makers/ Magenta: Exhibition

Group Exhibition - Magenta
Magenta: Extra Spectral Magic

Magenta is to color as artists are to society--naturally integral yet often misunderstood and under-appreciated.  While magenta is one of four primary inks used to print almost all of the printed material in the world the color has yet to secure the same kind of acceptance and notoriety as the traditional primaries red, blue and yellow.

The color Magenta cannot be found in Newton's R.O.Y.G.B.I.V. color spectrum.  Nor can magenta be found on a traditional color wheel.  While Magenta has always occurred in nature, it was not until 1859 that the color was commodified as a dye and named after the Battle of Magenta, a battle between the Sardinian and French armies that occurred in the Italian city Magenta.  Since then the color has proven to be essential in mechanical color printing technology (the M in CMYK) and is a natural secondary in the additive system that powers our computer and smart phone screens (between Red and Blue in RGB).

For most people, magenta is the brightest color.  Magenta appears so bright not necessarily because it contains more light, but because in order to perceive magenta two sets of cones in the human eye must fire at once: both the red-green and blue-violet light receptors.  Seen in this light, Magenta is not a color exactly; it’s a physiological phenomenon--magenta is only perceived psychologically by humans when pure red and blue light mix while green light is completely absent.  Unlike other bright colors yellow and cyan, which fall within the rainbow of the familiar visible spectrum, perceiving magenta requires wavelengths from two separate areas of the spectrum.

This exhibition celebrates the vibrant history, technological function and cultural associations of this magnificent color Magenta, as interpreted by nine area artists, Joe Hedges, Jiemei Lin, Jacob Lynn, Philip Lavelle, Christy Wittmer, Anastasiya Yatsuk, Jesse Fox, and Lindsey Sahlin.
